Fillings, Inlays, and Onlays: What Are the Differences?

Fillings, Inlays and Onlays Queens, NYWhen it comes to your oral health there are two main things you need to know: 1) how to brush your teeth, 2) that a cavity is your worst nightmare. However, amongst actually knowing what a cavity is, there are a few other things in between that you should also know about including the difference between fillings, inlays, and onlays. Let’s take a closer look.

A cavity is a hole in the tooth that grows bigger and deeper over time. Caused by plaque and bacteria that stays on the tooth for too long, the best way to prevent a cavity is to brush your teeth after every meal.

  • Fillings: A filling is what most people are familiar with in terms of cavities. Here at Woodside Dental, we offer patients composite resin fillings which proved patients with excellent durability and resistance for patients that have small to mid-sized filings. Because composite resin fillings are tooth colored, they can be used at either the front or back part of the teeth which makes them look more natural.
  • Inlays: Inlays are typically used when the cavity is too large to be covered by a filling alone. Inlays consist of a solid substance like gold, porcelain, or even cured composite resin which can be fitted to a cavity in a tooth and then it’s cemented in place.
  • Onlays: Onlays are very similar to inlays except that it incorporates a replacement for a tooth cusp by covering the area where the cusp would be.

I unexpectedly needed to get two fillings and the Doctor made it a priority to fit me into her already busy schedule and I didn’t even need to wait. “Ok first of I wanna say thank you so much to Dr. Montes, she’s the only dentist ever I felt so comfortable going back too. Not only she does an amazing job but she also makes you feel comfortable and relax for any procedures that needed to be done. This place is nice and clean and the staff are awesome! To Carla thank you so much for explaining me everything and made me feel like I’m just talking to a friend instead of being a patient. Thank you guys again!!”

“Very caring and knowledgeable doctors and staff. They have a beautiful office and state of the art equipment. Unlike other general dental practices, they can do most procedures in house, so you don’t have to be sent to another office. Really nice people and they make you feel at home, and well taken care of! :)”
