Kids Dental Checkups & Cleanings
Children are prone to developing cavities and gum disease just like adults, which is why we recommend regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings from an early age. Although primary (baby) teeth will eventually fall out, they require the same level of care to ensure healthy adult teeth erupt one day.
These six-month visits allow us to remove any plaque and bacteria on their teeth and around their gums as well as check for early signs of decay. We also use these appointments as opportunities to build rapport with young patients so that positive experiences are more likely in the future.
Dental Sealants
In addition to cleaning their teeth, we can also provide greater protection with dental sealants. Many children have deep ridges in their teeth. When they bite down and chew, bacteria, food particles, and plaque can become trapped in those ridges and eventually cause tooth decay. These areas are particularly difficult to clean with a toothbrush alone, so even the most fastidious of parents may find it challenging to keep cavities at bay.
With dental sealants, a protective layer is placed on the teeth so that nothing can become stuck in these ridges. The procedure is painless and fast since all we need to do is brush a material onto the teeth and allow it to harden.
Fluoride Treatment
Children and teens can benefit from additional fluoride treatment. While it’s commonly found in tap water and toothpaste, your child may not be getting enough to adequately protect their teeth from decay. With a fast and simple application during a regular checkup, we can quickly coat the surfaces of teeth so they remain better protected against cavities while also growing stronger.
Children’s Dentistry FAQs
Are baby teeth really that important to my child?
Primary teeth (baby teeth) are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, but they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.
What should I do if my child has a toothache?
First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen (Tylenol) for any pain rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.
How do dental sealants work?
Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.
How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?
Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.
