What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is when bacteria attack the soft oral tissues that surround and hold your teeth in place. As this happens, inflammation and bleeding can occur, eventually leading to gum pockets (separation of the gum from the tooth), loose teeth, and bone loss. It often occurs in stages with gingivitis being the mildest form with reversible symptoms.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

You may have gum disease if your gums are red, swollen, or bleeding. It is natural for this to happen from time to time after eating something that irritates your gums or brushing too aggressively. However, if this happens regularly, then you likely have some stage of gum disease.

Other common symptoms include bad breath, loose teeth, pain while chewing, sensitive teeth, or teeth that appear longer. If you notice any of these signs, call us right away. We can examine your gums and let you know what the source of your problem is.

How We Treat Gum Disease

Our dental office offers multiple solutions for gum disease treatment. Each provides effective results, so depending on the severity of your situation, we will recommend one of the following options:

Scaling & Root Planing

Also known as deep cleaning, scaling and root planing is the process of removing plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums before smoothing the tooth roots to encourage healing. This method of treatment can reduce the risk of reinfection because root planing makes it harder for bacteria to adhere to teeth.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

With the help of our Waterlase soft tissue laser, our team can target diseased and inflamed gum tissue thanks to the concentrated beam of light. Its optimal precision allows for greater accuracy, leaving all healthy tissues alone, which leads to greater comfort in the chair. By using the laser to eliminate bacteria from the roots of teeth as well as above and below the gumline, we can give your gums a better chance of healing quickly while avoiding the potential for any post-treatment discomfort.

Antibiotic Treatment

Once we complete scaling and root planing, Dr. Arsuaga may apply Arestin antibiotic treatment. This specialized medication works to eliminate small pockets of bacteria that remain in the tiniest crevices of the gum tissue. Once applied, the microspheres disperse within the gum pockets, releasing medicine slowly over a few weeks and targeting vulnerable areas.
